So the duck season is over and the upland season is coming to a close as well. Many hunters spend this time of year cleaning their guns and putting up their hunting attire in its proper place in the closet.
But what about your favorite hunting partner? Your dog cannot be docile in the off season. This is the time to fine tune the training and correct some of the problems that were obvious during the season. Did he break on you? Did he drop game 10 feet in front of you during a retrieve. Was he spooked on gunfire. This list can go on and on.
Now is the best time to work on the issues, or better yet, give him some good workouts to keep his spirits up if you have a finished hunting dog. And there is no better place to keep challenging his skills than a hunt test. You can train with your fellow HRC members and enter a few hunt tests for fun. Or better yet, enter to continue that journey to having him achieve that coveted title of Hunting Retriever Champion. But by all means, don't let your buddy lay around for eight months, put on extra pounds, and expect him to be ready for next season. He's your partner so enjoy the hunting experience for a few more months and enter a hunt test on www.huntsecretary.com.
