Summer in Texas, A Time for Healing

June 30, 2017

With the heat upon us in Texas, about the only training you can do with your Labrador retriever, Golden retriever or any other hunting dog must be water-related. But as I have discovered, it is also a great time to allow your hunting companion time to heal after a grueling six months of hunting combined with training for hunt tests.

But there is good news if your dog has some aches and pains from the grind. Things that work for us humans are now being applied to dogs. My Lab, Ellie, suffered a sprained shoulder last November retrieving a duck. Her shoulder never had a chance to fully heal over the season. My veterinarian recommended cold laser therapy.  Friends of mine who have played sports and have had arthritis highly recommended it. And the cost is reasonable, six treatments for $250. The wand is rubbed over the area, which loosens the area allowing more blood flow for healing. After only two treatments, Ellie is seeing improvement. And she gets to wear some cool shades!
