About LSHRC

The Lone Star Hunting Retriever Club was formed in 1986 in Dallas, Texas, making it one of the oldest and largest clubs of its kind in the country. Lone Star HRC boasts a membership of over 200 individuals residing in all parts of North Texas. Membership comprises waterfowl and upland hunters and professional dog trainers. They all have one thing in common--the love and admiration of hunting with a dog.

Each month members meet to discuss club business and topics of interest to all retriever owners. Guest speakers have covered topics related to waterfowl regulation, veterinary first-aid, and professional training. The club has also enjoyed videos about duck calling, duck decoy placement, and highlights from the National Grand Hunting Retriever Test.

In March, LSHRC hosts hunting retriever tests that attract hundreds of dogs and handlers from Texas and surrounding states. These Hunting Retriever Club Inc. sanctioned tests provide dogs the opportunity to compete for points and titles in three classes: started, seasoned, and finished.

The hunt test is designed to challenge the retriever’s ability, skill, and desire under realistic hunting conditions. Dogs retrieve real birds, handlers wear camouflage clothing, and shotguns loaded with blanks are fired as birds are thrown. Dogs in HRC tests compete against a set of standards, not each other, and dogs that pass the tests accumulate points and earn titles awarded by the United Kennel Club. Titles are recorded on the dog’s pedigree.

Club members have access to excellent training grounds in Royce City at any time of their choosing. Members can train on land or in water at the grounds. Each month, training sessions are regularly scheduled and well attended by members. In addition to training and testing, club members enjoy picnics, sporting clay tournaments, dove hunts, dog "fun" hunts, and an annual Christmas party.

First and foremost, LSHRC members are dedicated to helping one another raise, train, and test outstanding hunting retrievers. We invite you to join LSHRC if you are interested in finding a pup, training a retriever, or participating in hunt tests.

UKC's Hunting Retriever Clubs...Conceived by Hunters for Hunters

The Lone Star Hunting Retriever Club is affiliated with the United Kennel Club, Inc., Kalamazoo, MI, which carries the registry for the HRC. The UKC offers five coveted titles to the HRC program: Started Hunting Retriever (SHR); Hunting Retriever (HR); Hunting Retriever Champion (HRCH); Grand Hunting Retriever Champion (GRHRCH); and Upland Hunter (UH).

In keeping with the philosophy of HRC, titles earned are awarded as a prefix to the dogs name on its pedigree as opposed to a suffix to the name. The United Kennel Club, Inc., established in 1898, is the second largest all breed dog registry in the United States, registers over 250,000 dogs each year and licenses 10,000 challenging, fun, relaxed, family-oriented events annually.

All club members are encouraged to join the national Hunting Retriever Club.
